In 2017, she decided to pursue an advanced degree in Library and Information Science which would combine her love of literature and serving her community. “How did I get Here?”

Ms. Elayna Speight,
Owner & Graphic Designer/Artist
Inked Designs

Ms. Elayna Speight started her own business at the age of 23… Instead of playing sports which a tall girl is expected to do, I was always more into art. Drawing, painting; it was only a matter of time before I got into graphic design and advertising. I graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor’s degree in Advertising from the Art Institute of Washington in Arlington, VA. I greatly appreciate the time I spent there as I learned both the creative and strategic sides of design. Not only the “Who” and the “What” but the “Why” and “How” of a project.

My intention with my artwork is to show positive images of black women, featuring various skin tones and natural hair styles, to instill confidence and self love and the assurance that you are beautiful as you are in a society where often black women are shown the opposite. My art is inspired by the strength, vulnerability, royalty, joy, and magic of black women. I am inspired by the Carefree Black Girl. She’s an individual, not weighed down my the ever present negative stereotypes of black women. She is multidimensional with a mix of whimsy, laughter, intelligence, magic, the chicest fashion sense and passion.

We are in a season of grief and loss like we’ve never seen before. I had the opportunity to have a conversation with Evangelist Carolyn Starks about Grief and Loss. Evangelist Starks has a bachelor’s degree in nursing, a master’s degree in psychiatric nursing and a certificate of advanced studies in pastoral counseling. Her career and ministry has given her extensive experience in working in a variety of specialties in mental health, including acute and chronic mental illness, grief and loss and so much more. Her goal has always been to see health and wholeness in the body of Christ and to minister spiritual wholeness to the sick and burdened outside of the body of Christ.

She retired in April 2018 from a ten year position as Wellness Coordinator for Capitol Hill Group Ministry; a non-profit agency that serves the spectrum of the homeless population in Washington, D.C. and after forty seven years of service in the mental health field.
